Using 670's as most of you know. In dx9, I can overclock further and when I do get a 'driver timeout', all I have to do is quit the game and reset my overclock and I can go back to the game.

However dx11 games, such as; Hitman Absolution, Assassins Creed 3, Far Cry 3, Etc. I find that overclocking is a lot less stable, and when the driver does time out, starting the game again freezes the entire system and I have to hard reset.

So I end up lowering the memory clock a whole lot to resolve it. However I still get the occasional timeout. Even on completely pathetic overclocks.

Is this exclusively me? Because it seems to be true for both my 670's (to slightly different degrees).

With Far Cry 3 i had to push back my 7950 GPU clocks from 1200mhz to 1150mhz. The game is a freaking hog and i am guessing this is the norm with DX11 games.

Farcry 3 was the worst offender so far, yeah. Having to restart the entire system is the major pain, when troubleshooting clocks.

On my 680 I can go up to 1270 with my GPU clock and a max of +170 on my memory clock offset before I get driver
timeouts.

I've only noticed this with black ops 2. But not other dx11 games like bf3. Even crappy low overclocked crash black ops fairly consistently. Even no overclock will still crash it once in a while, with many crashes not allowing an exit and leave me with a forces restart. Quite annoying. I don't know if it's dx11 or just black ops causing the problem for me. Guess ill try far cry tomorrow and see.

On my 680 I can go up to 1270 with my GPU clock and a max of +170 on my memory clock offset before I get driver
timeouts.

I can go higher than that on both my 670's in dx9, even with games that use 99% gpu (skyrim with 8xaa + sparse grid supersampling + fxaa + RCRN). Yet going into the 70% useage range, (black ops 2, farcry 3, hitman absolution) still causes driver timeouts (and thus restarts) FAR below that.

I'm not entirely sure I trust you dx11.

In order of driver timeouts

1. Black Ops 2 - The master,
2. Far Cry 3 - Timeout King.
3. Hitman Absolution - Bald timeout king.

Assassins Creed 3 and Battlefield 3 don't timeout much.

That is only with BF3 and on my i7 950 @ stock clocks, I got higher with my 3930K but waiting for my MB to come back from RMA.
lol it rhymes.

I think the problem is just windows, out of most the operating systems its surprisingly unstable, bsod's, lock ups, crashes ect. All under different circumstances for different people. There's just so many different programmes that people run and hardware configurations.

Is windows 8 more stable?

.
Is windows 8 more stable?

Mr. Hyper seems to think so. As for myself, I wouldn't be able to say either way.
