View Full Version : Supertile vs AFR vs Default Driver? (feat. Scissor and PS2)

So after noticing that I got some negative scaling in PS2 and micro-stutter (on Driver Default settings).
I did some digging and found a recommendation to run it through radeonpro with AFR Friendly D3D and AFR mode.

Which... didn't work. Planetside 2 instantly closed when launching.

So, tried without AFR Friendly D3D profile.
Which resulted in Micro-stutter.
Oddly I didn't get it when at the Warp-Gate, but it made AFR unviable.

Then I noticed these two other options Scissor and Supertile.
Initial googling proved inconclusive as I only found a few articles from 2005-2006, so I decided to test them instead.

Scissor... Instant Black Screen crash. Didn't know where to start debugging it so I abandoned that mode.

Supertile.
What is this heavenly mode? No Micro-Stutter, No negative scaling.
So if you have issues with Micro-Stutter then try forcing Supertile mode.

Out of curiosity I ran Valley 1.0 (Probably not the most scientific method as my cat was sleeping on the exhaust so I got 80c+ on the primary card) with all three modes to see if there was any significant performance differences.

Can anyone else with micro-stutter issues on 7970's in CF test this please?

I'd like some feedback as well if anyone has CF setups.

In other news, in Planetside 2 there seems to be some performance difference if I use AFR vs Supertile at high / ultra settings.

I'd get 30-40fps GPU bound at the Warpgate with the Supertile, AFR 70-80 GPU bound with the same settings.
Lowering settings or actually going to a large fight both stay at 30-40fps.

Still AFR has horrible tearing/micro-stutter for me (maybe it's not microstutter, but tearing due to low fps, as I don't experience it at warp-gate with AFR).

Either way, a few medium settings gets me 70-80 with Supertile with ~45-55 in heavy combat which is pretty good considering it's Planetside 2.

I already sold my second 7970 but would have tried if I had come across this :(
