View Full Version : PSU Making a whining noise.

Okay so I just noticed that when I play a game with high graphic use (Crysis in this case) My PSU makes a whining noise, only when the game is playing. It's more like a screech than anything. I am sure it is the PSU because I opened up my case and put my ear real close to the water cooling kit, graphics card, and PSU.

What is this noise and how do I get rid of it.

when it warms up it seems to get a lot quieter... only really making any type of noise when i move my mouse. weird, I'll put up a video later of what it sounds like during the start menu.

I don't know how any of us here can help you, I would maybe suggest an RMA if it is still in warranty,
if it bothers you that much.
Best way to pinpoint where the noise is coming from is to use a straw ;)

Well i figured something out... when I set the limit to my graphics card at 60fps (using a 60hz monitor right now) .. it is quiet as ever. I am thinking it has something to do with the amount of voltage NOT being used? because its 1050watts and there is no way in hell my computer has maxed that out.

Wait, so your computer power supply makes noise when you OC your monitor?

That doesn't really make sense. Try it again

no no no... it has nothing to do with my monitor. I was just asking on here too see if anyone knew why it was doing this.

Oh I'm sorry, you said "limit to 60fps" not "limit to 60Hz"

When you limit the card, you're cutting down the load for your GPU, and hence, PSU.

For power supplies to whine after a certain amount of load is placed on them isn't unheard of, its just annoying. Heck, our monitors do it.

haha okay... I was worried something was wrong with it. It really got loud during a games menu probably because the FPS is so high then.

I recently had the same issue with my Fractal Design 1000w psu. One day while running benchmarks the PSU started emitting a whine. I called Fractal support and set up an RMA. Unfortunately because I purchased it in a different country than where I currently am the RMA process is still ongoing (3 weeks later -_-). Luckily newegg had a sale for an 850W platinum kingwin psu for 100 bucks so I picked that up for now and am just going to sell the RMA I get.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121089 this one?

I have the equivalent of that for EU market (SuperFlower Golden King 1000w) and it's super win.

What did they suggest could be the problem?

My Thermaltake 775w whines sometimes when my 5850 is at high load.

I wonder if they will give me something better if I try to RMA since this one is discontinued. :P

try it haha. I think I am going to keep it and just gut it out for the next 6 months. Once I put in another Titan, it should use a good portion of the PSU and make the whining go down. From so I read.
