Welcome to 120hz.net's mini-game performance review thread and refresh rate guide.

New Guide (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlXLrKnyrwqAdFloc2lUeUUzejIxWFVXUDRPbmVvR Xc&usp=sharing)

Attention: Due to Whitespider's absence, I'll (Shadman) be writing the guide as a Google Drive Spreadsheet for people to view, so any changes/additions you want to see, let me know! Just post in the thread, or PM me here (http://120hz.net/private.php?do=newpm&u=391). I frequent here often. See below for Whitespiders original post.

No Framerate Or Refresh Rate Limits Self Explanatory.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INI - You are going to need to edit an INI file to uncap the framerate.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Insert Number* fps Limited. - Means that there is a *Insert Number* fps hard limit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Optimization Limited. The game's optimization won't allow you to achieve a consistent 120fps
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MGPU You will need two (or more) current generation gpu's to achieve 120fps

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall Smoothness 1-10 - This covers the all encompassing smoothness of the framerate, this includes - in order of importance - Microstutter, Normal Stutter, and anything else that impairs 'smoothness'.

1 - Abomination.
2 - Migraine.
3 - Very Choppy.
4 - Choppy.
5 - Barely Tolerable.
6 - Tolerable.
7 - Acceptable.
8 - Smooth.
9 - Very Smooth.
10 - Silk.

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/5985/goldaward.png

The Extremely Rare Coveted Gold Award Represents everything we strive towards as community, an almost-consistent 120FPS at 1440p, all around fantastic optimization, and requires incredible artistic or technical visuals to boot. This is the gold standard for pc gaming.
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/8532/silveraward.png

The Quite Rare Silver Award is for games that achieve an excellence in smoothness and strong optimization. Even if it's not always possible to get to 120fps consistently. Much like the Gold Award, it also requires a game either have artistic excellence or technical excellence, preferably both.
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/4809/avoidaward.png

This abomination award. For only the very worst performing games in human history. This game commits all the worst crimes, from microstuter, to terrible porting to outright game crashes, this is the stuff of nightmares and horror movies. Avoid this game like the plague if are religious about performance. You have been warned.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/9758/newrelease.png
Released in the past few weeks/months. Important AAA games stay under 'new release' a little longer.

I have quite a few of these games and would like to help :D

Been playing Dead Space over the weekend and there is no need for tweaks.

- Choose your resolution in game, e.g. 2560x1440@120hz
- Turn Vsync off (WILL CAP THE GAME AT 60 IF ON - read more below)

Having Vsync on will cap Dead Space at 60fps. I've looked in the config file to see if it could be changed but no option to allow to.

edit:

Dragon Age Origins = No Limits.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood = No limits. I would imagine it being the same with the rest of the AC games.

Any advice anyone wants to share, go right ahead. I'll add it.

The reasons I am going to upkeep this thread, are twofold - A: It's easy to edit. My 'games that run above 60fps' thread was a formatting mess. This is easy to jump in and add stuff. and B: I have owned a catleap 2b for a long time now. When I made the old thread, it was with a u2711. All I tested was the framerates with a monitor that did not support a refresh rate of above 60hz. Which meant a lot of the findings where actually inaccurate.

Prototype 2 -

Have this as your SET LAUNCH options for Prototype 2 in Steam = RESOLUTION=2560x1440@120 (120 being the refresh rate of the monitor).

No Limits. Sli/Crossfire this generation cards recommended for 120hz. Vsync caps to refresh rate like it should.

Magicka -

Can choose 2560x1440 in game but it will be only 120hz if your desktop refresh rate is 120hz. Vsync is automatically on and there is no way of turning it off. (I couldn't find a way at least).

Transformers Fall Of Cybertron -

Capped at 60fps even if Vsync is on or off. Couldn't find a config for it or any information on it.

I would normally just copy this into the prototype 2 box, however I have had a different experience with the game. I find that for starters, you don't get much higher than 60fps - even on a 5.5ghz overclock. It might occasionally jump to 80fps or 70fps. However when it does, it feels less smooth than a constant 60. Also, when the framerate is not constant, the mouse or 360 gamepad loses sensitivity entirely during a shift. So it will feel like this panning camera(60fps), controller freeze(71fps), continue panning (59fps). Which is extremely broken.

Capping the framerate to whatever your minimum framerate is, is the best solution for this game. So if you mostly get 58fps with occasional raises to 70fps and frequent drops to 48fps. capping it to 50fps, would have smoother results without the controls outright breaking. It can handle a few fps in either direction, but the moment it goes over that. Horrible.

Also, the game does not support SLI. And gains are extremely minimal or even negative scaling in crossfire, which also has a lighting bug that disables the post processing for 60% of people.

It's a mess of a game.

If you run crysis 2 on a 1920x1080 monitor that has a native refresh rate of 120hz. Then crysis 2 should run at 120hz. If you have a lower native refresh rate, like 60hz. And have a custom refresh of 120hz, then the game will run at 60hz, unless you disable enable vsync a few times. Same thing goes for saints row 3, both direct x 11 games. The same is also true for crysis 1, except the vsync on/off trick does not work. So you need the minimum refresh rate to be the intended one. Otherwise it will default to 60hz. At least on nvidia cards.

That's why, firstly - I need to explain clearly why people should use CRU to remove any lower-than-what-they-want hz. I'll get around to that. This is still very much a work in progress. I generally just start a information thread and then tweak it until it feels right.

All unreal engine 3.0 games are not limited to 90fps. Some of the call of duty games are. Mass effect 3 is. There are hundreds of unreal 3 engine games, and they range from uncapped from the get go, to capped to 60fps, 90fps, 30fps, you name it. Some can't even be edited due to encrypted ini's, or config files that are inbedded into the actual exe. It ranges dramatically between games.

Source engine games, I think you are right on that one. (I am not 100% sure, they seem to all natively uncap)

The witcher 2 does look different, turn off motion blur for starters. It's not as dramatic as other games, because there is constantly a lot of cpu useage due to the high levels of geometry in the game. However the witcher 2 at 90fps is a lot smoother than the witcher 2 at 60fps. Games like dead space 2 or bioshock 1 will always be a lot smoother, because there is simply less to process.

Get any game that relies on a lot of geometry at gpu features, and you won't get pure silk. Not until those games in question can consistently hit the refresh target with room to spare. That room to spare is often what makes a game silky.

Thank you for the clarification. To date I've only played Crysis on a 1080p true 120Hz monitor, and on an AMD GPU. So I'm guessing I was in fact running it at 120Hz (big whoop, the game still barely cracks 50-60fps on an overclocked 7970)

Awsome. I like this list. This must be a thread for people with super eye sight like I have because I hear so many people complaining they can't really tell the difference between 60 and 120 fps. For me the difference is like night and day.

By the way, Trine 2 isn't capped at 100fps. Turn v-sync off in the game but add v-sync in the nvidia control panel and it should run 120fps. Although the characters kind of stutter while moving everything else looks very smooth.

My specs are i5-2500k 4.5Ghz & GTX670 FTW

I'll post others when I get time but for now (please disregard any that are already posted by others):

Aliens vs. Predator - Gpu bound, no limits. With a GTX 670 it will never dip below 120fps

Amnesia - Totally agree. Over 60fps doesn't look any smoother. Strange being a Unreal Engine game.

The Ball - game dips below 120fps but gpu isn't anywhere need full load. Neither is cpu. But game mostly stays above 120fps. no limits.

Gatling Gears - Easy to run with my specs. No limits

Hard Reset - Cpu bound. Need at least 4.5Ghz and min gtx 570. No limits.

The Haunted:hells reach - no limits

inMomentum - no limits

killing floor - no limits

Lara Croft and the gaurdian of light - Strange, with my specs game sometimes dips below 120 in certain areas even though gpu nor cpu is really stressed. No limits

Legend of grimrock - ran 120fps with my previous gtx570. No limits

Lost Planet 2 - Gpu bound. no limits

Madballs in Babo invasion - no limits

Magicka - This game drives me nuts. Starts at 120 fps then all of a sudden reverts to 60fps and stays there. I may need to tweak the "my documents\" location ini only and make it read only. no limits.

Metro 2033 - Gpu bound and you need a decent cpu. No limits

Mirror's Edge - Ran 120fps on my previous gtx 570. Tweak the ini file located in the "my doctuments\" folder. Trying to tweak the one in the steam games directory only causes the game to revert back to 60fps. No limits

NecroVision - Game will dip below 120fps in some places for no reason. Gpu and cpu are not really stressed. No limits

Nexuiz - Gpu bound. Tried, runs much better in sli. No limits

Portal 2 - no limits

Q.U.B.E - no limits

Quantum Conundrum - no limits

Rochard - Runs 120fps but there is a constant stutter. I haven't been able to figure out yet. No limits

Serious sam HD first encounter - Must be played in windows XP. In windows 7 it stutters for no reason. I tried it on three different computers with three different video cards. Also setting anti-aliasing to highest actually makes game run at a higher fps. No limit

Serious sam HD second encounter - same as first encounter. no limits

Serious sam 2 - Same as first two, need to increase graphics settings to make game run smoother (strange but true). No limits

Serious sam 3 - Cpu bound. Poorly coded. no limits

singularity - no limits

steel storm burning retribution - turn off v-sync in game but turn it on in nvidia control panel. no limits

Two worlds II - I think I remember it being gpu bound. no limits

Warhammer 40,000 space marine - need a good rig. No limits

Xotic - Another game that drives me nuts. In windows xp bad frame rates with a GTX670. In windows 7 alot better. On my friends computer (same specs and card as me) it runs perfect in windows 7. 120fps smooth and beautiful. no limits

WRC Fia world rally championship 2010 - gpu bound. you have to play with no blur mod for the game to look somewhat decent and then add FSAA antialiasing 4X. Without anti-aliasing at 4x the game tries to compensate by adding a very bad postprocessing effect that gives the game a bad look. And at 4x you need a very fast card. My GTX 670 can't keep 120fps in some stages. I tried it in sli but noticed a lot of microstutter. I will try again and tweak it with nvidia inspector. No limits

Resident Evil 5 - no limits

Trine 1 - you need to first update then mod config file and make it read only. no limits

***Also, I think every Unreal Engine game needs the ini file tweaked. Best to use the games ini file located in my documents folder if it has one. If not then go to games program directory.

***Some games, especially the serious sam games, actually run at a higher frame rate if you increase the graphics settings. This is for the games that don't load the gpu much like serious sam first encounter and second encounter and serious sam 2. I actually have to add supersampling (2x2) in nvidia inspector to get serious sam 2 to keep around 120fps.

Just tried it and it does work. V-sync @ 120fps. When you enable v-sync in the nvidia control panel are you using global settings or only trine 2? If only trine 2 then make sure the binary file you are applying it to is Trine2_32bit.exe and not the launcher.

I have it set to the game only in nvidia control panel and off in the launcher. I have the steam version which updates automatically. Make sure yours is updated.

I remember when the demo came out and I played it there was a 100 frame cap unless you used stereo 3d glasses which automatically enabled 120fps. I requested on the trine 2 forums that it be uncapped and I remember one of the developers promising me it would be done in later updates.:o

Anyways it works great for me except for the characters having a jittery motion. The rest looks beautifull.

@sk120 , I'll copy that across shortly. Any games that have not already been entered that is.

Also, amnesia is not a unreal engine game. It's a custom engine that uses OGL.

Also, when you say games are not using the maximum cpu and gpu, yet still get framerate drops. That's what I call a lack of optimization, or an artificial limit. Any game you play will have this. The time I mention it is when it is an extreme case. Like fallout new vegas, go to vegas and the game is sitting at around 40-90fps. Yet you are getting 30% gpu useage and 25% of 4 cores useage. That's an extreme case.

I love the game, so naturally I play it anyway. It's just extremely unoptimized. Fallout 3 even more so.

@Whitespider, your right Amnesia isn't an unreal game. I don't know why I thought it was?

Unoptimized games are frustrating. I use to think it was due to bad nvidia drivers. Owning a gtx 670 and an fast cpu and playing games that should be running at or above 120 frames per second but aren't using anywhere near full load on the gpu or cpu is frustrating. Even more so when the games are PC exclusives like serious sam 3. I think they recently released it for xbox360 but it was made for PC and has some of the worst optimization I have ever seen. And it's too bad because that game looks and plays great.

And it's too bad because that game looks and plays great.

It's a cpu optimization thing, not a gpu optimization. Every game, even optimized games like battlefield 3 - don't use the cpu beyond about 75% of it's potential. Usually about 65% on a game listed as quad core as recommended in the requirements. In fact, if a game used 95% of all 4 cores, the game and sytem would come to a halt. That said, most pc games have overhead all over the place.

Once we start getting 8-core console's (hopefully) and more-than-eight-core pc's, and every single game is dx11/12. There will be more room for optimization, a lot of multiplatform releases we get these days, are built with console's in mind. And console's dedicate entire core's to overhead. Whereas a pc evenly distributes load. You could max out 2 cores of a 3 core xbox, and it would not make the platform crawl, because the OS in the background still get's it's dedicated room to breath. However, translate that to a pc - and you are essentially getting a 2 core game, and spreading the threads of those two cores across 4 cores. It works to a certain extent, however at some point the amount of threads (or instructions dedicated to a specific task) run dry. That's when the artificial limitation comes into place. However, in direct x 9, you can also flood a game with too many threads, and there is overhead that can cancel out performance gains. That's why developers often flood games with gpu features, such as "high quality ssao" etc. It's easier to tack that on, than rewrire an entire gaming engine.

Dx11 offers more access to threads, without as much overhead. However most game engine's that use it, insert it into a dx9 engine. So the dx11 is those cases are just running specific optimizations over the top of dx9 code. The quick hack method of giving dx11 performance gains is simply to allow more stuff to happen on the gpu, rather than the cpu. Because offloading work to the gpu is always easier for a developer.

Which brings me back to consoles, once dx11 and dx12 becomes mandatory, then developers will have to ground-up make game engine's with cpu optimizations in place. Until then, expect a lot more games that run into invisible road blocks. And even after that happens, never expect full optimization in any game. Pretty much ever.

Thats interesting, what about 64 bit? If 64 bit executables were included with games I think that would help exponentially right there. This was my experience with the CryEngine 3 SDK. Im gonna go back and play with it now that I don't use vsync anymore, but back when I used vsync and 1080p running the forest demo in the SDK I would get 30-40fps using the 32 bit executable and would get a solid 60 (vsync capped) running the 64 bit executable. Pisses me off, games should be 64 bit standard on the PC...

We have had 64 bit processors for 10+ years and 64 bit OS's for about 8 years...

Now Im just ranting, but is it me or does every other form of technology move faster than gaming? I mean shit, many people have cars for shorter than the last console gen...And on the PC we'er all stuck to that shit!

That's because pc tech needs a revolution, you can only cram so many cores into a cpu, you can only shrink the die so many times before it becomes a loss to the manufacturer due to yields.. The next generation of cpu's need to be more like gpu's, alternatively gpu's need to take the place of cpu's.

When you do everything through a single architecture, performance can take a revolutionary dive into true optimization. Mobile phone tech might make it seem like we in some future reality, however you could emulate 50 of those systems with virtual machines on a single high end rig. The hard part is making something powerful, more powerful and I feel that shrinkage has come to an end.

I don't know what should happen next. A single architecture system makes sense. Imagine the losses that intel, amd, nvidia, and countless other subset companies would take from doing that however, unless they planned ahead and shook a lot of hands.

A lot of overhead these days is outdated architecture, unifying it would take out.. I don't know the percentages. It would be an improvement.

As for 64bit, that's more of a memory addressing thing. At least in the way that developers would use it. Something like skyrim with a lot of texture mods would benefit from 64bit, because data could be addressed in larger chunks. Stuttering and memory crashes would be eliminated. That's not what I am talking about however. We need something big, and until that happens, we are always going to be incrementing those hardware upgrades, and still facing the same bottlenecks.

Besides, skyrim would benefit a lot more from a physics engine that did not start breaking at about 100fps.

Right now however, i'll just be happier with more cores. Sure it's going to come to an end. Just not yet. And if I can get a 8 core cpu at 8ghz in the next 2 years, and xbox 720 games are making use of at least 6 cores in the lowest end of games. Then hey - that's something right.

I heard the next gen Nvidia cards will have a CPU on board as well. GM110 series. It will probably require games to be designed to take advantage of it. But with that, and PhysX, it will take a load off from the CPU. So your CPU wouldn't be the big determining factor when it comes to gaming performance. Your all in one video card will.

But with that, and PhysX, it will take a load off from the CPU. So your CPU wouldn't be the big determining factor when it comes to gaming performance. Your all in one video card will.

I just hope it's not exclusive. As much as I love physx and nvidia features, making something that so directly impacts performance has to be made open. Otherwise a small subset of developers will develop for it, and everyone else will just release conventional games.

Or, if that won't happen. Make it take the place of a cpu. Just for the love of god don't make developers have to program specifically for it. Otherwise we will get another TXAA on our hands.

I'm guessing AMD will have to follow suit or get left behind and have Nvidia dominate the market, at which point all developers will have to code their games to take advantage of it. But realistically I think it will be made by both sides, and have the same general design and architecture. I think it's a great idea. But as you said..just like TXAA, it's only great if developers take advantage of it.

NEW ENTRY

XCOM Enemy Unknown - No limits, turn off frame smoothing ingame to disable the 60fps limit. Right now there is no sli/cfx set of profiles that play the entire game smoothly. The game starts to choke a few missions in with more than one gpu.

Hopefully new drivers will fix this.

Just pre-ordered the old school first person shooter Painkiller Hell & damnation and got to play the beta. Pretty fun. Game looks beautiful and plays pretty good considering it's a beta. I really like it.

No limits, but not well optimized.

Since it's a beta and the final game has yet to come out, I jumped on the company's forum and every forum related and posted the issue. I got a reply from one of the developers assuring me the game will be more heavily optimized at final release. ;)

What ini edit are you talking about?
Open your multiplayer config file located as below
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 3\players2\config_mp.cfg
Open the file with wordpad and add this line of text: seta com_maxfps "92"
I checked the file after playing the game and that line I entered was gone but it indeed allowed a max of 91 FPS with vsync enabled ;)
I assume it does the same with your single player config file but I haven't tested it.

What ini edit are you talking about?

Ini edit required - means that you will have to google how to uncap the framerate until I get a chance to complete this thread.

Right now I am just filling in games. I come around every day and fill out another game or ten. Eventually I'll include all the ini tweaks required. Until then someone else is going to have to answer you in regards to how to edit a specific ini file.

That way I get to fill out every single game. And add new games as they come.

To do list:

Fill in basic information about games.
Keep up to date.
Fix Mistakes.
Write INI guides.
Expand in other ways.

There are absolutely mistakes right now, not all of this information is 100% correct, and 100% clear. I plan on fixing this up and getting advice from people about confusing entries. So the input anyone gives me is useful. Negative, positive. It does not matter.

Not 90hz. Whatever the hz you are running the monitor at. If there is a 90fps cap, and you are running 120hz or 130hz. Then that's 90fps @ 120-130hz.

As for it running 90fps strait up, that could well be a mistake on my part. I'll update it when I run the game to test. There might be a way to remove the 90fps cap for singleplayer, however I can't know until I dig around in ini files, and I won't be doing that just yet. I believe there is a fps cap for multiplayer. 90fps is probably the cap.

Just tested doom 3 bfg edition. It's 60hz or 120hz ONLY. Which means you need to have 120hz as a option in nvidia/amd control panels or default via CRU. I had 131hz only via cru, and the game went to the lowest resolution and could not detect 2560x1440. Only when I entered 120hz did it detect 2560x1440 @ 120hz.

I'll update that shortly.

You guys aren't running these games maxed out at 1440p are you? For instance, whitespider, you claim Aliens vs. Predator "With a GTX 670 it will never dip below 120fps" however you look at any benchmarks and a single 670 can only get about 50-60 fps maxed out at 1200p much less 1440p.

It's capped at 90fps. So i'm running it with 90 Hz. This should be more smoth than 90fps at 120 Hz!?
The only thing i did was to create a resolution at 90hz in the nvidia control-panel. After that i was able to set the 90Hz ingame.

If you read my post correctly you would notice I had an in-game setting of 120hz with V-Sync enabled which resulted in the game running at a solid 91fps.
Which tells me that the game indeed DID accept my 120hz refresh rate but as the game is capped at 90-91FPS, with V-Sync enabled,
that is all that was allowed.
I didn't specifically create a 91hz refresh rate.

That was me actually, and no the game is not maxed out at 1440p. Everything is maxed except anti-aliasing is turned off and I'm using a 1680X1050 120hz monitor.

Most of the time no one mentions their monitors resolution when benchmarking but it can make a big difference in frames per second.

Disabling anti-aliasing in most games increases the frame rate considerably. I personally rather have high fps and no anti-aliasing than smooth edges but a lower frame rate. Even on a 1680x1050 monitor edges look fine to me with no anti-aliasing.

F.E.A.R.3 can do 120hz with a tweak:
There is a config file, named "options.cfg" in the game folder.
Open it with notepad/wordpad and edit the following line: #-preferrefreshrate:120
You need to delete the # before the command, to enable it.

Got afew games for you but at 1080p
- i5 @ 4.4Ghz
- 8GB ram
- 7970 @ 1100/1500

Saints Row - The Third
- No FPS cap, smooth 120Hz with a good GPU combo. Can't get 120 with an OC'd 7970

Prince Of Persia
- No FPS cap, smooth as silk (smoothest looking game i've ever played and the art style goes soo well with it. HIGHLY recommend to see how beautiful 120Hz can be) ~50-70% 7970 utilization

Shift Unleashed 2
- No FPS cap, unoptimized and won't fully utilize the GPU power available to it. So you won't see 120fps for a while.

RaceDriver GRID
- No FPS cap, very easy to run and a smooth 120Fps with ~30-40% GPU utilization

World in Conflict
- No FPS cap, requires a good CPU and GPU i get between 90 - 100Fps with an OC 7970

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
- No FPS cap, requires a good CPU and GPU i get between 80 - 90Fps with an OC 7970 (its more demanding)

Max Payne 3
- No FPS cap, requires a good GPU for a smooth 120Fps (i get between 90-120) with OC 7970

limiting prototype 2 to 60fps made the game significantly more playable!

Some players have mentioned that "stuff flashes" at 120hz in EVE, on occasion I do notice some space stations flashing for a few seconds (like they are flickering in a shadow) but that doesn't ruin the experience at all.

i love this list and keep recommending people look it from all the various forums i visit. Thanks for this OP and please continue supporting it.

I am adding and subtracting from it. Still very much a work in progress. My goal is to get it easy to understand, and to provide a wide variety of performance recommendations. That's why I expanded into frame perception, it's hardly covered in gaming hardware reviews. I think, in many cases - that's more important than the refresh rate.

If a game feels choppy, and it runs at a high framerate - what is the point of the high framerate? Hopefully people will get a better understanding of a games performance before diving in that way. Also, a certain amount of these statistics are not entirely accurate. They are 'ballpark' figures.

I do try and keep it relatively fair however, for example. For some completely odd reason - SLI makes skyrim super smooth (so long as you keep a stable framerate). However the majority of configurations result in skyrim having some form of microstutter and normal stutter. With a lot of ini tweaking and SLI, my skyrim is a 9/10 or 10/10 in overall smoothness. However that's one kind of config. So it get's a 7/10. And barely earns that.

Disabling vsync gives you a higher framerate NUMBER, however it feels 'less' smooth that way. Vsync in the game caps it to 60fps, however it feels smoother. It's an engine thing.

Keep vsync on, and enable SSAO if you have a semi-powerful nvidia card. It makes the game look better, and does not affect performance - since you are running 60fps anyway.

Rayman 3 is capped to 144fps, if not it falls to 72 and then 36. To play at high resolutions and 16:9 , you have to find Windows/Ubisoft/ubi.ini and change the row after [Rayman3]
to
Gli_Mode=1 - 2560 x 1440 x 32

Geometry Wars Evolved runs at 60, when forced refresh at 120 it does frame doubling, still 60fps. Can run 2560x1440. At fullscreen stutters (why?), at window mode it's smooth.

That new devil may cry game seems to have no framerate limits, and runs at 200fps on a single 670 according to some german benchmarks. So that should be something to look forward to on a technical level. And hell, the game might even be half decent as well.

I don't have your driver installed for my monitor. Think that could be it?

Nvidia's vsync worked for me personally. When I disabled the ingame vsync. Closed the game, set nvidia vsync to forced on via inspector. And then booted the game back up.

Once you have the game running at 120-130hz however, it's the smoothest game out there (with vsync enabled). Bar none. In a world of varying framerate's and methods to get framerates stable, it's nice to play something that just locks to the refresh rate for the entirety of the game. Furthermore, the actual smoothness of the engine has not been matched since dead space 2.

It might not have high resolution textures or dx11, but it still looks good in broad strokes. And runs sensationally, in part - as a result of those omissions and the performance complications they bring to the table.

HDCP breaks with the SLI/Fermi portion of ToastyX's patcher. I tried just the 330Mhz Pixel Clock patch and used my SLI trick and HDCP issues were resolved. The monitor driver should have absolutely no bearing on HDCP.

The game looks fine. I just got pissed off at the developer essentially saying "we let you play with a mouse and keyboard. we don't get enough credit." And even without vsync the game has incredibly high framerate. Like 200-400 range at all times. So it performs even better as for some reason vsync to me feels like it introduces input lag.

You have to disable driver signature enforcement first by doing advanced restart, and selecting to boot with that feature disabled.

It's faster reacting without vsync, absolutely. I personally find the vsync visual smoothness in this specific game to be second to none. However.

Update on more Source titles: Zeno Clash is fine: smooth flowing, interestingly 'different' art style to most games.

Day of Defeat: Source looks OK, I'm getting a lot of stuttering on some servers, not sure if it's game or connection tho.

Penumbra I don't think is Source after all, probably custom engine a la Amnesia: Dark Descent. For 2560x1440 you need to edit config file.

Vsync is bad for multiplayer/competitive games. Also, have you installed the monitor driver?

whitespider

Vsync IS bad for competitive games. It also reduces the smoothness dramatically (some games become unplayable in terms of smoothness lost, battlefield 3 is not one of these games). Most games at 160fps @ 132hz feel like 50fps to me. Turn on vsync, feels like 132fps.

I still recommend it off with battlefield 3, because you want that precision and timing, and vsync means you are rotating a tank. Which feels great in SP games (imo) but not so great when you missed a headshot you could have quickly reacted to otherwise.

Company of Heroes works fine, disappointed that 2560x1440 didn't provide more viewing area as such, the tight camera is annoying. Why they made it so you can zoom in so close you can see individual dust grains but can't zoom out enough that you can see a decent area of the battlefield I just don't know... I guess the maps are so small it has to be that way.

World in Conflict is nice and smooth, also uses 2nd display for map (only on multiplayer unfortunately).

Supreme Commander lists correct resolution and refresh rate to choose in options; supposedly supports 2nd monitor a la WIC but in my case just get a grey screen on the secondary (was running 2560x1440x110hz + 1680x1050x60hz).

Men of War also lovely and smooth, a good alternative to COH if more complex and fiddly in parts.

Really? I manage to hit 120fps (or above with Vsync off) on AMD. I also don't get the stutter above 60fps that whitespider describes. This is with my standard smoothness tweaks in RadeonPro so not sure if that's influencing it

Aye. Sorry. Talking about Crysis 3. The game slows down every time it wants to load anything in. It looks very poor, compared to BF3 for example (which I used because it's a Console ---> DX11 port as well). The performance is horrendous! It's usually in the 50% CPU range, though I've seen it go as high up as 70%, but that's rare. And this isn't because I'm missing HT with my new chip, since I finally found a compromise and have it running stable at 4949MHz with HT on. I did notice FPS on it went to 105 at one point. Not sure how/why as it was an odd time for it to hit 105. I'm about to set up a 16GB RamDrive and try to run the game from there to see if it helps at all with the stutter/low fps as it loads things in.

Honestly from a technical standpoint, I have to give Crysis 3 a 3 out of 10. Even the 3 Titans I have coming won't be able to deal with this.

HyperMatrix

From a ramdrive, the random stutter/fps drops while things were loaded in is gone. I'm guessing if I had dropped it on my gaming SSD rather than my HDD this wouldn't have been much of an issue either. Still poor looking game with low FPS. Which is sad...because I really like the feel of the guns in the game. When the Titan's arrive we'll see if the rest of the issues can be powered past with massive GPU force, or if it's just poor CPU optimization for Intel chips thanks to their partnership with AMD on the game.

At the current point I'm at, running Tri-Sli, I'm getting 100FPS. My GPU's are at 33% usage and CPu's are around 45%. What's odd is as I move around, I notice the FPS meter spike upward to 145-170fps, and then be brought back down to 100fps by force. So now I know it's not an optimization issue, but rather some kind of a cap.

I've noticed that when I watch FRAPS with Crysis running, it tends to try and hug certain round framerates. It tends to "lock on" around 40 or 60 FPS for me, only floating to about 2-3 FPS above and takes a second or two to "unlock" and then stick to the higher limit even when I look straight down at the ground. Really weird stuff going on there, or I'm just crazy.

I run the game off two SSDs in RAID0 on an actual SAS RAID card and I don't have any loading pops after about the first 3 seconds of a round. Singleplayer missions load a checkpoint in about a second after a death and then I'm good. I'm also running on an old AMD quad core at about 4GHz as opposed to an i7 so that could be part of it, it's not butter but it's really not bad. Crysis destroys my rig even on medium-high settings, can't break past 60FPS with a 670 but I also play a good bit of MechWarrior Online (also CryEngine3) so I'm kinda used to it by now.

And I will say, running around in multiplayer with Heavy Weapon Pro, Maneuverability, and Hunter on and grabbing a pole is some of the most fun I've ever had in an FPS. Absolutely ridiculous when you run and hop around in the middle of an open field with their whole team shooting at you and still landing a 15 kill streak. Close second is my Crysis 2 carryover of Gauss rifle with Rapid Fire, Aim Enhance, and Retriever or Surveillance. Man I need to make some videos...

First level I'm getting between 130-200fps with everything maxed out including tessellation, tressfx, 4x ssaa, 2x transparency Anti Aliasing, and all quality related settings in NVidia control panel set to max. Impressed that the game actually uses over 2gb of vram...Keep in mind these frames are with 3 oc'd gtx titans going full blast at 100% and a 5ghz 3770k. Wouldn't want to imagine how bad is on a single card. Especially since I'm only getting these framerates in a tiny little cave. I'm going to guess that I'll have to turn down some settings to maintain 120+fps in outdoor levels. I will update as I progress.

Update: Did a quick bench with fraps on the level where you get the bow off the hanging dead dude (level/part 3?).

Frames 8634
Time (ms) 60000
Min 109
Max 179
Avg 143.900

My top 2 Titan's were running incredibly hot (because they're stacked). I had to set it back to complete default clocks, and run fan at max. Still card #1 and #2 hit 81c, while card #3 that had breathing room hit 67c. Got so hot that some artifacting began. I had to tab out to give the cards time to cool down. If it happens again I may have to downclock my cards....

On the plus side, I'm not suffering any performance issues.

Update on TressFX:
- Big Performance hit for single-cards
- Was added into the game late. Pre-rendered cutscenes using game footage show a no-tressfx lara.
- It looks great! But only if you're getting high FPS. Under low FPS, it gets stuttery and its physics go all out of wack and it in general becomes erratic.

Update on performance:
- Just realized the game has an actual "Benchmark" mode. Put your settings to whatever you like. If you want to try increasing/decreasing certain features to see how it affects your performance, you can make small adjustments and re-run the benchmark. I scored a 124 average fps on it.

How should I go about implementing it into my loop? Would the existing xspc kit you recommended be enough? Should I add a pump/radiator after the CPU before hitting the GPU's or are 2 pumps not allowed in a loop? Should I then setup a separate loop for the GPU's?

Simply grab the Bulletstorm ini editor (I used this one but there are others http://games.softpedia.com/get/Tools/Bulletstorm-INI-Editor.shtml ), open the StormEngine.ini file in your Documents\My Games\BulletStorm\StormGame\Config folder with it and change the line bSmoothFrameRate=False
Just to be safe I also changed the two instances of

Ittle Dew: Silky smooth at 120fps. Problem is, gameplay speed scales with framerate. (What is this, 1985?)
Rogue Legacy: Silky smooth at 120fps.
Terraria: 60 fps cap.
Don't Starve: Can't tell if it's rendering at 120fps. FRAPS fps overlay doesn't work within the game.
The new Tomb Raider: Game looks *great* and runs at high framerates. 150-180fps with dual 7950s at 1080p. This one deserves at least the silver award.
Skyrim: No way should it get a silver award. Game physics completely broken at 120fps.

Lost Planet 3 has a 62fps cap. Unreal engine. DX9. Absolutely terrible console port ala Dead Space 3. Nothing added in to the PC version. My cards are averaging 15% usage (Triple-SLI titans). The usage is so low...that they remain in idle mode at 525MHz instead of their normal clock of 1202MHz. This is with all settings maxed out completely in-game, and also in Nvidia Control Panel. Absolutely terrible. However, you can remove the FPS cap.

Open LostPlanetEngine.ini in to C:\Users\HyperMatrix\Documents\My Games\LostPlanetGame\LostPlanetGame\, where you'd substitute "HyperMatrix" for whatever your windows username is. Find "bSmoothFrameRate=" and change it from TRUE to FALSE. Save. Change the file to READ-ONLY. Otherwise it will just revert back to the original settings next time you launch the game (not sure why). This means that you need to make sure all your other engine settings are as you like them, as no in-game settings of that nature will be saved going forward (unless you remove the Read-Only tag, make the changes, then redo this process).

How consistent have you found this game to be? I gave it rave reviews for performance and balanced cpu/gpu utilization initially, but as I progressed through the game I got to areas where the framerate would drop to 70fps depending on the direction I was looking in. The drop was due to a CPU bottleneck, even on a 5GHz cpu. So it should be unrelated to GPUs. What processor are you using and what is it clocked at?

Let's see... My graphics settings are all maxed except Level of Detail which is High instead of Ultra, and Reflections at Normal instead of High. Hair Quality is grayed out -- I assume this is an nvidia PhysX feature. I'm running a stock 2600K (3.4Ghz) and about 25% through the game.

Now that you mention it, I do recall significant drop in framerate when the village was burning near the third camp. Probably 40-60fps -- sure felt like a slideshow compared to 120.

Though usually the bottleneck was GPU not CPU as I recall both of my cards being maxed out in afterburner.

Do you think it's possible for different video cards (ATI vs nvidia) to have significantly different CPU usage profiles? Has anyone tested this?

Both of my GPUs were pretty much maxed out while playing the game, indicating that CPU was rarely the bottleneck. I'm going from memory here as I haven't played the game in about a month.

I haven't had much experience with nvidia. Have you heard of games having different CPU usage profiles under different video cards (ATI vs nvidia)?

Which parts, Hyper? I didn't experience that with Tomb Raider (but was not running in max settings, admittedly). Was super impressed with the game from start to finish. Near full GPU utilisation throughout, which is how it should be. Just wish I had the GPU grunt for 120fps with TressFX, as I really like that effect

Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons
Needs game controller to play (or at least highly recommended)

60 fps cap by default. Game uses Unreal engine, so it's highly customizable, even if the launcher has very few options.

To uncap edit %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\UnrealEngine3\P13\Config\P13Engine.ini

bSmoothFramerate=FALSE

If you have a high end system, max out everything:

MaxMultiSamples=8
MaxAnisotropy=16

Shadows look bad by default. Make them look better:

MinShadowResolution=256
MaxShadowResolution=1024
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows=True
ShadowFilterRadius=3
ShadowTexelsPerPixel=3

Good game. Highly recommended.

Amensia: A Machine For Pigs

Graphics look like they are from 2007. Stutter in the game happens quite frequently, pausing graphic updates for as much as half a second (but the game keeps going?). Happens in the menu with the mouse movement, too.

60 fps cap. To uncap fps edit

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Amnesia\Pig\main_settings. cfg
Engine LimitFPS="false"

If you're expecting the game to live up to Amnesia: The Dark Descent you'll be disappointed.

So, I started a spreadsheet. Before going down the whole list, should I do things differently?

and can people see it?

You probably played the game at launch, he is probably just now playing it,I recall at least one patch released that addressed excessively high CPU usage

I asked pcgamingwiki.com and they added 120hz option to their game template (http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/topic/442-add-120fps-support-to-template/?p=1899).

Check out list of games here (http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Property:120Hz).

Shadman, thanks heaps for volunteering to do this. MOST welcome.

I personally really like the Google Doc but suspect that the list as a whole is more likely to be widely shared if it remains an OP that is kept up to date.

Since you have mod privileges, it's probably worth editing the OP to mention that whitespider is (as far as anyone knows) MIA until further notice, so people wanting to propose updates via PM should send them to you instead of him...or better yet, post in the thread itself.

OK guys, I wrote in to Assassins Creed 3. Is this formatted alright and decently readable?

Volgarr The Viking

In fullscreen mode the game is capped to 27-28 fps.
In windowed mode the framerate is not capped. Tested both 120 hz and 144 hz and got 120 and 144 fps, respectively.
Force vsync from the game options screen for smoother gameplay. At 120 hz I got 111 fps without vsync and 120 fps with.
One of the few sidescrollers to not cap the framerate at 60.
I recommend forcing borderless fullscreen windowed mode using an external tool for best experience.
If you yearn for the days of hard but fun side scrollers, this is the game for you. Make sure to use a gamepad and remap spear throw and forward roll to their own buttons.

60 fps limit.
Can remove fps cap using -nofixedstep command line switch. However, this breaks attack and walk animations for both you and the enemies.

Just got Assassins Creed Black Flag but I noticed its only running at 60 hz.
Is there a way to adjust it or is it capped?

HyperMatrix
11-30-2013, 01:59 AM
I haven't found a way to remove the cap in that game yet. I do find using a game controller makes it smoother than using a mouse due to the smoother/slower movement of analog sticks as opposed to a high precision mouse.

I'll add a game here:

NFS Rivals:
Create a shortcut to your NFS exe, and modify the Target field as such:
"G:\Need for Speed Rivals\NFS14.exe" -GameTime.MaxSimFps 90 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 90+

Adjust the "90" to whatever you want. For example, 60 fps. The game as I had mentioned before ran incredibly smoothly for a 30fps game. So even playing at 60fps will be a big step up from last years NFS Most Wanted. Enjoy. Keep in mind that if you set the FPS to anything lower than what your system can maintain consistently, you will get slowdowns in gameplay. For example if you set 120fps, but are only running at 60fps, your actual game time will be slowed down 2x. That's why I've set mine to 90. Even then there are a few places in the game where it drops below that and I go into "bullet time." But this makes it very playable.

Has anyone managed to get AC4 to 120hz with the new patches?

Garrett

For those checking PCGamingWiki (http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Home) for 120Hz fixes note that the 120Hz setting has been renamed to high frame rate (http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Frame_rate_%28FPS%29) to encompass 144Hz displays and other uses; the associated property is now Property:High frame rate (http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Property:High_frame_rate).

The criteria hasn't changed; high frame rate is true/hackable if the game can both run at 120 FPS (or higher) and supports 120Hz or higher refresh rates.

Wow, that is a great improvement! I took a look of how it was classified and it works well now, really awesome to see this! Thanks for the link (and sorry it didn't show before, I needed to approve the post because it had a link and new user). Although it seems that when the game does not have an entry whether or not it can do 120Hz, it is left blank. I believe it should at least say "not known yet" or "only supports 60Hz." The example I'm seeing is AC:IV Black Flag (due to DrPhilGood's request)

Page example here: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed_IV:_Black_Flag

The row's absence when unknown was a remnant of the old 120Hz implementation. I have updated the template to have it visible when unknown just like the other settings.

From Steam, press configuration. Can set 120hz. No problems so far with 120fps/120hz (initially capped to 30fps and had physics problems above that, since patched).

Edit: Note that Mission 18a (2nd to last) cannot be completed @ 120fps. You must set config to Window/30 fps to enable squad to climb ladder into Marmota. Then you can re-configure to finish mission @ 120/120 fullscreen.

Imperium Romanum has options to select refresh rate - played at 120hz 2560x1440 on Windows 10 no problems to report (AMD 280x).

Grand Ages: Rome is ostensibly the sequel. Refresh rate is present in options but for some reason the max res is 1856x1392! Possibly fixable via a config file

Works anyway @ 120hz but IMO the inferior title.

Seems to be capped @ 60 fps unfortunately. Also 1920x1080 is the maximum selectable resolution.

Neither issue hinders gameplay as such though....

In the launch options in steam for game Transformers Fall Of Cybertron or Rise of the dark spark
to uncap the framerate enter this exactly:
-silent FPS=120
or
-silent FPS=118 one of them may work better than the other.
-don't enable this in multiplayer else get banned. (reports of running too fast)

Enjoy
