View Full Version : XFX 7970 Video Card, Looking for Info

I like the XFX Warranty. Ive used XFX and love how they upgrade cards for free.

So I was hoping people might point out concerns. Here are the three cards I am considering and I don't see much difference between them except that one has a higher stock core mhz then the rest.

Plan of Use:
I plan to water cool and overclock these at some point down the road.
I am going to use them to overclock a Catleap monitor to 120+hz.
Plan to get 2 now for crossfire and later down the road possibly more.
GAMING... fraps... movies... all at once.

What concerns should I be aware of?
What are the difference between the 3 cards in the link?
Which do you recommend?

I had a XFX 6970 XXX'd and man was it a POS, it was the "silent revision" so it was missing some hardware compared to the reference board; the fan was louder compared to my Sapphire revision 6970s (the toxic look alikes). And finally the card could not overclock for shit, i may have gotten a bad card but it really turned me off XFX for good.

IMO "stock overclocked" cards are not worth any more money, most if not all cards from the same series can easily hit the same overclock and above with little hassle.

If you are watercooling why not get a reference card, many waterblocks are designed with the reference cards in mind and even if you dont watercool the reference cards are much better for a crossfire setup due to the blower style fan.

There is little difference between those cards outside of the coolers.

How long are you planning on keeping the cards? Most brands will have a 2 to 5 year warranty and brands like ASUS or MSI allow the transfer of the warranty to another owner.

Sorry that im so negative towards XFX but id hate to see someone else shell out hard earned cash and be burned like i was. If you are set on the warranty as the deciding factor then good luck, would love to see some photos of the loop when its completed you dont see many AMD loops these days.

If you are going to water cool the cards, IMO you may as well just get reference cards, no need to pay extra for the OC versions.
You should easily be able to achieve a similar OC on water to the more expensive OC versions (on water as well) plus
it will be easier to get a reference block as opposed to double checking that a block will fit a non-reference card.
I bought a Gigabyte GTX 580 3GB card that had the 3 fan cooler, I had to do a lot of investigating and lucky
for me the PCB was a reference model so the stock 580 water blocks fit it.
I can also confirm (this is not an OC version card) on water I can OC this card just as well as others have stated they can do on their
Gigabyte GTX580 Overclocked versions on water.
BUT, if you are looking at crazy OC's on the cards with higher Voltages then some of the OC cards have upgraded hardware
to account for much higher voltages, this is something you need to look into with any card you are thinking about.
IMO as stated above though, Reference + Water Cooled = cheaper + similar OC's ;)

I have never water cooled before, I was wondering if I might need another pump? Someone suggested another radiator, 360 rad. What other stuff might I need?

The Order I was considering, might alter based on what else I need. With one Pump and Rad:
Pump > Rad > CPU > GPU1 > GPU2 > Res > Pump

Normally you will want at least 1 x 120mm rad per heat source so you may want to get another rad somewhere in there. I dont watercool yet but am planning on, from what i hear you should not have two pumps in a single loop (although people are on both sides of the fence here). Whats the case you are adding this hardware to and how much room do you have for additional radiators?

As i said im still new to watercooling but i am doing my research, i guess you could always run two loops in your rig, one for the CPU and a 2nd for the GPUs.

A guy on OCN helped direct me. I dont need another pump according to him the one I have can do the jump.. I do need another rad. I am using a 810 thinking about getting a rad to mount to the top and using my current rad mounted to the bottom.
